Condition & Proposed Treatment Reports for Grant Funding
This includes examining paintings and writing detailed condition reports and proposed treatment plans that museums, foundations, and historic institutions — like California’s historic missions — can use to pursue grant funding for conservation treatment. These reports document the painting’s current condition, outline recommended stabilization and treatment steps, and provide cost and timeline estimates in a format that supports strong grant applications.
My condition and proposed treatment reports have helped institutions secure grant funding that covers the full cost of recommended conservation treatment for their paintings.

When institutions pursue conservation grant funding, they often need comprehensive condition reports for each painting. These reports must clearly outline not only the current condition of the piece but also its significance to the collection and community. Preparing these reports requires close examination of each painting as well as consultation with institutional staff, curators, or foundation representatives to ensure the report aligns with both conservation priorities and funding requirements.
For each painting, I prepare an individual report that includes:
An overview of the piece and its importance within the collection or exhibition.
A detailed summary of condition, broken down by component (secondary support, primary support, ground layer, paint layer, coating, frame, etc.) or by condition issue.
A recommended treatment proposal, including necessary stabilization and more cosmetic conservation options.
Cost and timeline estimates in a format that strengthens the institution’s grant application.
Whenever possible, I also incorporate supporting context about the painting’s history and relevance, gathered through my own research and conversations with staff. This ensures the report not only communicates conservation needs, but also makes a compelling case for funding.
Photos taken during examination are always included as an appendix. (Please see the anonymized sample report below, shared without images for client privacy.)
